Profound Hearing Loss: Signs, Causes & Recommended Hearing Aids
Profound hearing loss means only very loud sounds can be heard, and most speech is inaudible without maximum amplification or a cochlear implant. This level typically requires specialist audiologist evaluation to determine the best path forward.
Common Signs of Profound Hearing Loss
- Unable to hear speech even at close range or high volume
- Only aware of very loud sounds such as sirens or heavy machinery
- Complete reliance on lip reading, sign language, or visual communication
- Little to no benefit from standard hearing aids
Common Causes
- Severe congenital or hereditary hearing conditions
- Untreated progressive hearing loss over many years
- Significant illness, trauma, or ototoxic medication effects
- Advanced age-related hearing decline
Recommended Hearing Aid Types for Profound Hearing Loss
Requires a clinical evaluation to determine between super power hearing aids and cochlear implants.
